40th Anniversary Celebration of the National Mine Health and Safety Academy

This August marks the 40th anniversary of the National Mine Health and Safety Academy (Academy) in Beaver, West Virginia. To commemorate the Academy’s 40 years of service to the nation’s miners through education and training, Florida Mine Safety is attending an anniversary celebration at the Academy on Wednesday, August 17.

We have seen many changes to the Academy during the past 40 years, all of which reflect their dedication to promoting miners’ safety and health. In addition to mine health and safety training courses, the Academy also conducts hands-on firefighting and fire suppression training at the Mine Simulation Laboratory and distributes education and training materials. The Academy’s facilities are used by miners; mine operators and their representatives; state, national, and international mine safety organizations; academia; and Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) personnel. In addition, their library materials promote miners’ health and safety by providing easy, quick access to a variety of mine safety and health information, training materials and programs.

Training the nation’s miners and mining community on technological advances and methods to eliminate unhealthy and unsafe working conditions will assure that our progress continues in the future.
