The Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) has posted a Seasonal Safety Alert on its website. Historically, October has been the mining industry’s deadliest month, especially in the metal and nonmetal (MNM) sector. Last year – in 2015 – a concerted effort by industry and MSHA to make October safe instead of deadly resulted in zero MNM fatalities, and the positive effect carried over well past the end of the month.
MSHA encourages the mining and mineral milling industry to focus intently on safety again this October. Find and fix hazards, reinforce safe work practices and keep safety uppermost in the minds of everyone at your mine or plant. Safety meetings, toolbox talks, tailgate meetings and posting on the mine bulletin board are just some of the ways you can use the Seasonal Safety Alert.
