Steven M. Lipscomb

During this year’s Surface Mining Emergency Response Training and Competition, we paused to honor the life and sacrifice of Steven M. Lipscomb, a Marine Corps veteran and dedicated miner from Elkview, West Virginia.
Steven Lipscomb lost his life while rescuing members of his crew at the Rolling Thunder Mine in Nicholas County, West Virginia. In his final moments, he worked to ensure the safe escape of the 17 miners under his leadership.
His courage and commitment to his team reflect the highest ideals of service and responsibility that define the mining and emergency response communities.
He is survived by his wife, two daughters, a sister, a brother, and a sister-in-law.
Steven Lipscomb’s family will receive a posthumous Act of Bravery Miner Hero Award in his honor, recognizing his selfless actions and unwavering dedication to protecting others.
We extend our deepest condolences to his family, friends, and colleagues. His legacy serves as a solemn reminder of the importance of preparedness, training, and looking out for one another in every operation.
