Kevin P. Deel, 67, of Slate Lick, PA, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on Saturday, June 15, 2024, due to cancer. Kevin was born April 6, 1957, son of the late Esther B. (Lewis) and Andy J. Deel and was a lifelong resident of the Freeport area. He graduated from Freeport Area Senior High School with the class of 1975. His professional passion was mining. He spent several years working for R&P Coal as a miner and foreman and returned to the mines as a federal safety inspector for the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) following a period of time as a realtor, primarily at Northwood Realty. His later career was spent serving in various capacities at the Department of Labor and MSHA Headquarters in Washington, D.C., in support of miners nationwide in roles related to safety, health, education, training and policy. Personally, Kevin was committed to nothing more than his family.
He enjoyed being involved in any extracurricular activity in which his children participated. From school field trip chaperone, to t-ball and little league coach, to more than a decade as a Cub and Boy Scout leader, he was present for almost every game, school play, track meet, or event his family was part of. In recent years, Kevin and his wife enjoyed travelling around the country to remain ever-present in the lives and experiences of their children and grandchildren. Kevin is survived by his wife of 40 years, Cheryl (Fitch) Deel; his children, Andrew and his wife, Chelsea (Lawhorne) and grandchildren, Charlotte, Josephine, and Margaret Deel of Anchorage, AK; Nicholas Deel of Bloomington, IN; and Carly (Deel) and her husband, Christian Heilman of Roanoke, VA; and siblings, Jerry Deel of Madison, OH, Sharon (Deel) Goldinger, and Mark Deel of Freeport, PA.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Dan and Rodger Deel; and his sister, Cheryl Deel of Freeport, PA. Friends and family will be received for visitation from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Friday, June 21, 2024, at Slate Lick United Presbyterian Church, 106 Brown Road, Freeport, PA, followed by a service at 12:30 p.m. with Rev. Adam Clever officiating. A family interment will follow at the Slate Lick Cemetery. All friends and family are welcome to attend a 1 p.m. luncheon at the church.
